Wedding Veils

Wedding veils became popular in times long past, when arranged marriages were common. Their purpose was to hide the bride from her husband (who she had probably never even seen before) until they were married and he then "took" her as his own. Nowadays, veils are simply a pretty tradition.

There are tons of veils on the market to choose from--we should know, we carry many of them! So where do you start? Here's a helpful guide to finding the right veil for you.

Don't wait until you've purchased your gown. Start trying on veils the minute you try on dresses--ones loads of tulle, one layer of tulle, ones with pearls, flowers, embroidery, and satin. This way, you'll know from the beginning what styles of veils look good on you and which ones don't, regardless of the dress you choose. If possible, try to wear your hair the way you will for the wedding (at least up or down) when trying veils on so that you have an idea of how it will really look.

Also, get to know the classifications of veils. Fingertip veils end (not surprisingly!) at your fingertips and can be simple or fancy. Short blusher veils end at the shoulders, while a mantilla is a Spanish-inspired delicate veil, and you might also try a ballet or waltz veil, which ends at your ankles. Similar to jewelry, veils should be kept simple during day ceremonies and can be more formal the later the wedding is.

Once you've found your dress, narrow down your veil choice to the one that complements your dress and doesn't hide any of its gorgeous detail. For example, if you have a stunning backless dress, you may not want to choose a long, three-layer veil that will obscure the back. As a general rule, the more elaborate the dress, the simpler the veil and vice versa.
